Course Description: Sixth grade science has several major areas that it emphasizes. The emphasis in each of these areas corresponds directly to the state of Michigan’s Grade Level Content Expectations and Next Generation Science Standards for each area. Starting this year Sixth Grade Science will focus on Physical Science.
Class Rules: (Same as KMS Expectations) Know Them!!!
Am I prepared for class?
This class will be a combination of classroom activities, lab work, videos, computer activities, homework, lectures and discussions. I expect each student to maintain a class notebook. Instructions for maintaining the notebook will be provided in class.
No food or drink will be allowed in class. The science room will have chemicals being used, living specimens, and rocks and dirt spread around. This is not an environment for food or drink.
Evaluation/Grading:
Student grades are based on a point system. Students’ grades consist of homework, labs, journals, responsibility, projects, and quizzes. There will be a few opportunities for bonus work also.
Grading Scale:
A 94-100 B+ 87-89 C+ 77-79 D+ 67-69 F 59-Below
A- 90-93 B 83-86 C 73-76 D 63-66
B- 80-82 C- 70-72 D- 60-62
Homework/Labs
Complete all assignments by the due date (Usually the following day). Assignments will be “due” when I request them at the beginning of the class period. Please make sure that all assignments are written legibly; if I can’t read it, you can’t get credit for it! All students are responsible for finding out what they missed when absent.
Projects
There are several projects throughout the year to help you further develop your understanding of specific content discussed in class. Each project will have a specific due date and rubric to follow. Point totals for a project range from 50 to 100 points. Late projects are deducted 10% each day they are late (maximum amount of days a project can be late is 3 days or a 30% percent deduction).
Tests and Quizzes
Tests and quizzes are given periodically to assess a student’s understanding of the subject matter. I will provide study guides for tests approximately one week prior to the exam. Students must come prepared to take the test the first time because there are no retakes. If a student is caught cheating on a test, he/she will receive a zero on that test and the parent will be notified.
